Whitney M. Young Magnet High School’s Dub TV Studio received a major upgrade yesterday when Cinespace Chicago Film Studios donated a new set to the show that is created by students of the West Side institution.

Custom designed and built exclusively for the program, the structure includes a background lighting unit capable of producing 1,700 distinct colors.

Dub TV is a weekly comedy, news and information webcast filmed and edited at Whitney Young. Besides reporting school news and other CPS-related activities, the show runs regular features including Signed Sentence of the Week, Talent of the Week, and Hallways of Our Lives (the only high school soap opera parody in the world).

Cinespace President Alex Pissios, Production Manager John Slove, and Director of DePaul University School of Cinematic Arts John Corba were among the attendees at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the new studio yesterday afternoon. They were joined by students, faculty, administrators, and CPS leadership.

CPS parent Augustine Marron, who introduced Whitney Young television Dub TV to Cinespace executives, notes, “the new studio set is a huge upgrade from what the media students at Whitney Young have used for the past five years.”

Sharp-eyed viewers of the webcast and of the Fox television hit show Empire may notice that part of the background to the studio includes elements of Cookie’s bedroom set from Season One of the hit show.

Jay Rehak, 21st Century Multimedia Literacy teacher, also recognizes the importance of the professional looking set as it relates to student learning.

“The fact that Cinespace executives, as well as Mr. Corba from DePaul’s film school, contributed to this project is amazing,” he says. “My students work is immediately elevated and their sense of professionalism is immediately enhanced.”
