Chicago’s own Daniel Kyri is coming home — at least for a little while. Just four months after his emotional exit from Chicago Fire, the beloved actor confirmed via Instagram that he’s back on set, reuniting with castmates and stepping once again into the turnout gear of firefighter Darren Ritter. His caption said it all: “Back! For a limited time only.”
For fans, Kyri’s return is more than just a casting update — it’s a long-awaited reunion. Since joining Chicago Fire in Season 7, Ritter quickly became a fan favorite, known for his heart, integrity, and steadfast loyalty to Firehouse 51. His absence in Season 14 was always going to be felt. When Ritter departed at the end of Season 13, viewers were left without a true goodbye. No farewell speech, no parting embrace — just an open-ended absence.

Showrunner Andrea Newman has hinted in interviews that Ritter’s story deserved more. She promised that certain departures, including Kyri’s, could still have a “big ending,” one worthy of the characters fans have grown to love. With Kyri’s return, it seems that promise is about to be fulfilled.
Kyri, a native Chicagoan and champion of the city’s arts community, has been more than just an actor on the show. He’s been a voice for authenticity, representing the city with pride and using his platform to highlight Chicago’s vibrant culture. His on-screen charm and off-screen dedication have made him a fixture both on set and in the hearts of fans.
While details of Ritter’s arc remain under wraps, one thing is certain: this limited-time return will give audiences a chance to see him one more time — and perhaps say the goodbye they never got. For Chicago, for the fans, and for Reel Chicago, it’s a moment worth celebrating. Welcome back, Daniel.
One Chicago returns on Wednesday, Oct. 1, with the premieres of Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D.‘s.
