Cinematographer, Steven Poster heads a two day event at Loyola

Loyola University Chicago’s School of Communication – Film and Digital Media program and Canon USA are hosting a special two-day visit by Chicago native, acclaimed cinematographer, Steven Poster.

A former president of both the International Cinematographer’s Guild (ICG) and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), Poster’s distinguished career includes work on films such as Donnie Darko, Rocky V, Ridley Scott’s Someone to Watch Over Me, and Chicago-made Opportunity Knocks and Next of Kin.

This visit is a homecoming for Poster, who will share insights into his career and approach to lighting in a series of lectures. He will also screen his iconic film Donnie Darko, followed by a Q&A session. Additionally, Poster will lead a hands-on master class titled “How to See Light” at the university’s Water Tower Campus Convergence Studio, located in the School of Communication building.

The lecture will take place Tuesday, October 29th at 12:00pm on the 4th floor of the Loyola University’s Information Commons, located at the Lake Shore Campus followed by a screening of Donnie Darko at 4:00p.m. The question-and-answer session will be moderated by SOC FDM Assistant Professor Vincent Singleton. This event will be held at the 125-seat Damen Cinema theater situated on Loyola’s picturesque Lakeshore Campus. Both events are free and open to the public. The Midwest film community is encouraged to attend.

Day 2 will be one-on-one student feedback sessions, a classroom takeover demonstration, a Canon equipment demo, and a class visit with producing students.

Through its corporate education initiative, Canon brings visiting artists to universities around the country who spend several days with students and conduct hands-on workshops, classroom takeovers, student portfolio reviews, and group discussions. Its renowned Explorers of Light program provides a platform for these artists to share their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of visual creatives.

“Experiential learning is a primary component of our approach to film education here at Loyola’s Film and Digital Media program and strengthening partnerships with industry manufacturers such as Canon further enhances our programming and helps prepare our students for life after Loyola,” Singleton states. “In addition to getting our students out into the industry through partnerships with professional service providers such as Resolution Digital Studios, the Telluride Film Festival, and the American Pavilion of the Cannes Film Festival,  we strive to bring the industry into our classrooms by consistently inviting a host of top-tier industry professionals and alumni to guest lecture in our classes, such as actor Joel McHale, producer TJ Berden, executive Dana Gills of Monkey Paw Productions, and Illinois Film Office Director Peter Hawley, to name a few. This upcoming experience with the venerable Steven Poster is an extension of our commitment to those types of opportunities. We can’t wait to push that farther in collaboration with Mr. Poster during this visit.”
