Chicago’s Summer film production slate is heating up

Chicago film and television production is buzzing with energy this summer, as soundstages across the city fill up with everything from studio blockbusters to indie gems.

Cinespace Studios, The Fields Studios and CineCity Studios currently remain central hubs of activity with Apple TV+’s Dark Matter continuing production through August. The A24 feature Enemies—starring Jeremy Allen White and Austin Butler—is rolling across the city and wrapping select scenes downtown this month; and there’s a number of indie films setting up production offices.

Looking ahead, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med are all set to resume filming in late July, kicking off a new season of high-stakes action for NBC’s powerhouse franchise.

Meanwhile, Showtime’s The Chi is expected to return to production in the late fall, to start up their production office and begin prepping for filming after the Christmas holidays.

The city’s indie film scene is equally alive with CineCity Studios hosting multiple projects including the psychological thriller False Awakening and the genre-bending Double Blind.

Director Duane Edwards, known for Wrong Numbers, returns to helm his new feature Laura Louise, which begins filming this fall.

Indie feature, Chicago Nobodies is expected to begin filming in late July through mid August. Producers are Mark Nathan and Andy McDermott. The story follows a lovable group of oddballs and misfits that come together to take out the best 13U soccer team in all of Chicago in the city-wide Capelli Cup.

Also generating buzz is Lucky Kraken Studios, the new content house founded by industry veterans Ted Lega and Sam Wackerle. Their flagship unscripted series Lost Classics will begin filming this summer and is set to launch on major streaming platforms—a fresh format that merges nostalgia with deep storytelling.

And just beyond the city limits, the irreverent dark comedy Chili Finger, featuring a powerhouse cast including Judy Greer, Sean Astin, Bryan Cranston, and John Goodman, starts shooting in Central Illinois this summer.

From major networks to emerging voices, Chicago continues to draw storytellers of every kind. It’s shaping up to be a dynamic summer of production—and a promising fall just around the corner.
