Chicago WGA members to show solidarity with Starbucks workers

In an unprecedented move, Starbucks workers across the nation have banded together to form unions in over 335 stores within just two years. This historic unionization wave has been fueled by a collective call for Starbucks to uphold the progressive values it claims to stand for, by respecting the fundamental right of workers to organize.

However, the response from the coffee giant has been met with accusations of union-busting tactics. Reports indicate that Starbucks has allegedly violated federal labor laws on more than 200 occasions, making them one of the most egregious union busters in modern history.

Starbucks workers came out in force to join with SAG actors and WGA members on the picket lines last Friday as part of the Starbucks Workers United 13-city “Union is Calling” bus tour. In light of the recent troubling developments, workers and allies are mobilizing for action against Starbucks. On August 7, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am ET, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) will join Starbucks workers in solidarity at locations across midtown Manhattan, Chicago and other cities, demanding that the company respect the workers’ right to organize.

Leaflet actions are planned for both Midtown East and Midtown West locations, with participants being assigned specific store locations later in the week. These actions aim to raise awareness about the issues Starbucks workers are facing and amplify their demands for better treatment and respect for their rights.

The leafleting actions will take place in Jersey City, NJ; Morristown, NJ; Newburyport, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Washington, DC; and Memphis, TN. Starbucks workers from different cities are standing united, making it clear that this is not just an isolated incident, but a national movement seeking change.

The message to Starbucks is loud and clear: the workers will not back down until the company ceases its alleged union-busting practices and genuinely respects the rights of its employees. Supporters of the cause are urged to participate in actions at their local Starbucks stores if they are not in the aforementioned cities.

In a statement, the WGA expressed their commitment to stand with the workers, emphasizing the need for Starbucks to uphold its purported values of being a responsible and compassionate employer. The demonstration aims to send a message that the public will not be swayed by mere corporate rhetoric and that actions must align with words.

Starbucks has long been regarded as a leader in corporate social responsibility, but the recent unionization drive and subsequent allegations have put the company’s reputation to the test. As the struggle for worker rights continues, the public eye remains on Starbucks to see how the company responds to the demands of its own workforce.

Workers and allies are gearing up for the August 7 actions, donning WGA swag and marching in solidarity. The outcome of these demonstrations could mark a pivotal moment for workers’ rights within the coffee industry and beyond.

This story is developing, and updates will be reported as events unfold.
