Camp K announces diverse coaches roster for 2023 Competition

As the deadline for submissions to AICP’s popular Camp Kuleshov (Camp K) trailer competition approaches, a lineup of experienced Coaches has been unveiled, ready to provide mentoring and creative guidance to emerging creative artists participating in this year’s contest.

Known for its annual post-production competition that challenges entrants to re-imagine existing films in innovative ways, Camp K has assembled a diverse and accomplished group of Coaches for 2023. These veteran talents, some of whom are former Camp K winners, are set to offer invaluable mentorship to budding creatives.

The esteemed Coaches for this year include Editors Chris Franklin and Val Lasser from Big Sky Edit, Jen Dean, Jay Nelson, and Robert Ryang from Cut+Run, David Rubin from Cutters, Jenny Schaye from Optimus, Keith James from Republic, Justin Trovato from Cosmo Street, and Sound Designer/Mix Engineer Joe O’Connell from Sonic Union.

The Camp is designed to provide emerging talent with opportunities to enhance their creative and problem-solving skills while gaining access to invaluable mentorship. The competition challenges participants across various post-production disciplines to re-imagine existing films, transforming them into something entirely new and different. Winners at the chapter level of Camp K become eligible for the prestigious grand prizes, known as The Lev Awards.

In the Editorial Category, entrants must select a film and reimagine it within a different genre or directed by a filmmaker with a distinctive visual or narrative style. This year, a new option called ‘tri-mash’ allows entrants to choose up to three films and create a trailer for an entirely new, unrepresented film.

Graphics entrants are tasked with creating an opening title sequence for a movie that either never had one or had a weak one, conveying their interpretation of the film. Sound Design participants must choose a section of a film and create a completely new sound design that differs significantly from the original while remaining entirely original in itself.

A noteworthy addition for this year is the Music Composition Category, which joins Sound Design as the second audio-focused challenge. Entrants in this category will score a 90-second passage from one of two films that originally had no music score.

This year’s lineup of coaches includes both seasoned veterans and newcomers to the coaching ranks, each offering a unique perspective to their role. Some coaches have previously participated in Camp Kuleshov competitions, providing them with a deep understanding of what works and what doesn’t.

Camp K aims to fulfill its mission of providing entrants with mentorship from experienced post-production artists, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.

The competition is open to junior-level creatives, administrative and entry-level employees at AICP member post-production and production companies, freelancers, support staff sponsored by member companies, students, and interns sponsored by member companies. Junior-level employees at music, sound, and audio post companies that are members of the Association of Music Producers (AMP) are also eligible to participate.

Camp Kuleshov is proudly supported by Avid, which will present certificates for Media Composer or Pro Tools to the first-place winners in each chapter, and Musicbed, an AICP Supporting Partner, which is providing selections from its production music library to entrants and offering a $1,000 prize to each Lev winner.

The entry fees for Camp K are $65 for single entries, $55 each for three or more entries, and $45 each for five or more entries, with discounts applicable to both companies and individuals.

Participants in Camp K interested in connecting with one of the Camp K Coaches can send an email to the ‘Camp Counselors’ at campk@aicp.com, and a Coach will be assigned to assist them. Complete rules, objectives, and this year’s source films for each competition category can be found on the Camp K website at www.campkuleshov.org. The deadline for entries is September 22, 2023, at 11.59 pm ET, with the announcement of all Camp K winners scheduled for events in participating chapters later this fall.
