Bat Boy, Weekly World News on comeback trail

“Weekly World News,” the black & white tabloid of the ?90s once the home of disinformation and deranged characters like freedom fighter Bat Boy is being reinvigorated by a new owner for a new generation.

Foundation Content’s Focus Creeps and director/editor Matt Egan created a trailer to promote “Going Mutant: Bat Boy Exposed,” a book from Simon & Schuster that just hit bookstores.

The 2-minute teaser trailer for the book, in live action, special effects, 2D and 3D graphics, goes viral Friday, strategically linked to social media networks.

Foundation’s client is Neil McGinness, CEO of Bat Boy LLC, whose investment group bought World Wide News archives in 2008 with the aim of rebranding and restoring the fake-beyond-belief publication to its rightful place in the pop culture.

To produce a promo for the book, McGinness sought the talents of the Focus Creeps — Foundation’s directorial team of Ben Chappell and Aaron Brown ? whose edgy, award-winning, Top Ten- listed music videos he has long admired.

Finding the duo at Foundation, he hired the company for the production -? and got a bonus from president Samantha Hart’s experience in creating and producing Hollywood movie trailers.

McGinness, a former VP/Entertainment and Comedy for IMG Worldwide and VP/marketing for Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, has been shopping ideas to create a feature film or television show based on Bat Bay or any of the other WWN characters.

“We see tremendous potential for growing the brand and significantly expanding the business,” McGinness said at the time of the purchase.
