Of 500 Emmy nods, 10 are non-station entries

There should be something for everyone in the upcoming 48th Midwest/Chicago Emmy Awards to be held Nov. 19 at the Thorne Auditorium.

Approximately 500 persons, shows and stations were nominated, and winners in 63 categories should go home happy at the end of what looks to be a long night.

Actually, there were 30 major categories?topped by “Spot Coverage and Breaking News,” and 33 sub-categories under these that ranged down to headings such as “Off Camera: Non-news Graphics/Animation.”

Out of this multitude of choices, seven nods (as best discerned from the 13, single-spaced pages of nominees) went to Chicago shows by non-station producers, such as S2, and to three individuals?one a local director.

And the nominees are…

Informational Program: “CPS Right Now!” Maggie Magee, Bob Fox, executive producers; “Connections,” Louanne Fries, and “Your Town, Chicago,” Lorraine Bender, Deborah DeVaughn.

Documentary of Historical Significance: “Paper Trail: 100 Years of the Chicago Defender,” Paul Bruckner, Barbara Allen producer; Documentary of Cultural Significance: “Acts of Mercy,” Bill Kurtis, Jerry Rose, TLN;

Conversation, Interview: “Check Please!” and Children’s Program: “Check Please, Kids!” David Manilow, V.J. McAleer.

Individuals cited were John Wassel for Individual Excellence Off Camera Direction, Editing, “Upscale TV: Chicago Composite,” and and On-camera Moderators Chicago native Harry Lennix (“Chicago Defender”) and William Kelly (“Upscale TV”).
