Jeremy Allen White, acclaimed for his role in FX’s The Bear, is set to star in and executive produce a Netflix limited series adaptation of André Aciman‘s 2017 novel, Enigma Variations.

The series, currently in development, will explore the complex romantic life of its protagonist, Paul, as he navigates relationships with both men and women from adolescence into adulthood. The narrative spans various locales, including Southern Italy, New England, and New York City.

Aciman, renowned for his novel Call Me By Your Name, which was successfully adapted into an Academy Award-winning film in 2017, will also serve as an executive producer for the series. Amanda Kate Shuman is attached as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce.

White’s portrayal of Paul marks a significant addition to his burgeoning career. He has garnered critical acclaim for his performance as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in The Bear, earning multiple awards. Additionally, White is set to portray Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere, which chronicles the creation of Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska.

Enigma Variations delves into the intricacies of desire and identity, themes that Aciman has masterfully explored in his previous works. The novel’s portrayal of Paul’s evolving attractions and relationships offers a nuanced examination of human sexuality and the complexities of love.

This adaptation signifies Netflix’s continued commitment to bringing diverse and thought-provoking narratives to the screen. With a talented team at the helm, Enigma Variations is poised to be a compelling addition to the platform’s original content.
