South Africa the location for Wrigley’s Extra gum spot

BREAKING THIS WEEK is a 60-second spot and 30 and 15-second versions for Chicago-headquartered Wrigley gum’s biggest brand Extra, via Energy BBDO. The theme is, “Sometimes the little things last the longest. Give Extra, get extra,” in the center of emotion moments between a loving father and young daughter, seen mostly in close shots in a house and on a train.  Some other children and adults appear briefly as the spot evolves.

What is infinitely more interesting is the fact that the spot was filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, a 20-hour plane ride from Chicago, which begs the question, why?

Adding to the international flavor was Finland-native Peter Riski directed for the US division of international production company Rattling Stick, whose headquartered is located in London. Their executive producer was Jennifer Barrons.

For Wrigley’s Chicago agency, Energy BBDO, creatives were GCD Rick Hamann and ACD Jimmy Dietzen; John Pratt was the EP.

Editorial company was Cut & Run, of New York, editor, Eve Ashcroft; The Mill’s local office provided visual effects; EP Jared Yeater, VFX supervisor, Andy Sommerville.  Audio Producers Group did the announcer voice casting and audio post.
