Chicago’s favorite romantic comedy is the John Hughes’ classicSixteen Candles, according to a report issued this week by research company Comparitech.

The 1984 coming-of-age comedy tells the story of a family that forgets about the 16-year-old birthday of their daughter and sister, Samantha, played by Molly Ringwald. After Samantha’s parents ignore her and her private quiz answer ends up in the wrong hands, her sixteenth birthday becomes anything but sweet.

Filmed extensively throughout Chicago’s North Shore, Sixteen Candles became a cultural touchstone of the Reagan era while launching Ringwald’s career and putting John Hughes on top of a genre that he helped to create.

How did Comparitech come up with the list? Google, of course.

Using the search engine’s list of top romantic comedy movies, Comparitech searched each film individually on Google Trends to find which state scored the highest. The top result is the designated film for that state. If any state came up twice, they used the film that was more popular over the last 12 months. If a state didn’t appear top for any of the movies, the company searched through all of the films to see which ones came out on top in that state.
