Dick Wolf finds filming here ‘unbelievably positive’

Back in the day, before “Law & Order” and multiple other Dick Wolf police dramas became household names, Wolf was in advertising.  He was a copywriter on National Airlines, an account his agency was about to lose.  His boss ordered him to “go try to sell them something new.”

Positive Pompous Society feedback, but bashing, too

What would any successful event be without a useful post-mortem?  And that post-mortem is what the Pompous Society eagerly convened Tuesday night at the Farmhouse, a Midwestern craft tavern at 228 W. Chicago Ave.

Tuesday night was to be the “what did we get right and what did we do wrong” assessment of the party and speech that officially kicked off the Pompous Society late last month.

Good grades to McGuinness for positive DDB changes

So how’s he doing?  As Peter McGuinness rapidly approaches his first year anniversary on the job as CEO and president of DDB/Chicago, he at least has managed to now to bring some semblance of stability to an agency that was — for much of the past decade — in danger of imploding.

The shop is not fully righted yet, to be sure.  But things are better. There’s no denying Anheuser-Busch, long a lucrative, flagship account at DDB/Chicago, officially left the fold on McGuinness’s watch. But for all intents and purposes, it was already gone before his arrival.

WE HEAR … and this is only a rumor, hearsay, unconfirmed talk and all that — BUT it’s being bruited about that Springfield might up the filmmakers’ tax incentive ante to 30% and give it a two-year life span.

We can certainly hope this becomes a reality, as we ? and possibly our legislators — see evidence of how our neighboring states are benefiting from their excellent incentives and how those advances could happen here, too.

Facilities owners are generally positive about anticipated benefits from new stage complex

Local 476’s late Frank Hobbs had a saying: “When the stages are busy, we all prosper.” After a too-long Gobi Desert-like dry spell, the hope is that the proposed Central City Studios will boost local film prosperity.

There’s general agreement with IPA’s Mark Egmon that “the complex will be a phenomenal shot in the arm for the community,” in far-reaching transcendent terms.

As CFO director Rich Moskal put it, “A complex like this is a way for us to get Hollywood’s attention.

Two Midwest SAG AFTRA offices to merge with Chicago

Recent decisions made by national SAG AFTRA were positive and not necessarily so positive for the talent unions that merged in early 2013 after 30 years of discussion and now representing more than 165,000 members in front of and behind the camera.

On the plus side, the union’s National Board and the advertising industry’s Joint Policy Committee in late April agreed on terms of a new television and radio contract.
