Havas Chicago welcomes new GCD Karen Goodman

Former Under Amour creative, Karen Goodman, has joined Havas Chicago as Group Creative Director.

According to Agency Spy, she will lead the creative on the agency’s Hefty and Reynolds accounts while reporting directly to ECD, Paul Hirsch.

In a statement, Hirsch said, “The range of experience Karen brings to Havas is invaluable. We’re building a shop infused with heart and soul and culture. There’s so much opportunity to create and Karen has the chops to run with it.”

Havas Worldwide rebrands Euro RSCG; top execs remain

What’s in a name?  Not enough to keep it apparently, if you’re David Jones, CEO of the Paris-based holding company Havas.

This week, Jones announced his daring decision to scrap the worldwide advertising agency network previously known as Euro RSCG, which is the principal ad agency network within the Havas empire. 

Effectively immediately, Euro RSCG has been rebranded as Havas Worldwide.

Live from the Museum of Broadcast Communications it’s The SNL Experience!

According to The Chicago Tribune, a major, 500-artifact exhibit, chronicling the four-plus decades of NBC’s late-night topical humor sketch series, is coming to the Museum of Broadcast Communications in October.

The Museum’s founder, Bruce DuMont says the exhibit will change the dynamics of the museum. “It’s a grab for the gold ring. I think it’s going to dramatically change the museum for the better. We’re very excited about it. There’s going to be more attention, more traffic, more buzz about the things we do here.”

Beginning Oct. 21, the show is slated to run for 14 months at the North State Street museum that is celebrating its 35th anniversary but has struggled to draw visitors and get on sound financial footing.

Kurt Fries named CCO of McGarryBowen Chicago

Congratulations are in order for well-liked and respected advertising veteran, Kurt Fries, as he has been promoted to CCO of Mcgarrybowen Chicago.

According to an Adweek article published last weekend, the agency is shuffling its U.S. creative leadership as Matthew Bull, chief creative officer in New York, has decided to leave the agency.

Sears slashes 400 jobs in corporate offices

According to multiple June 13 reports, Sears announced it would cut 400 jobs, affecting mostly its employees at its corporate headquarters in Hoffman Estates.

The layoffs come as part of an effort to restructure, which is designed to deliver Sears $1.25 billion in annual cost reductions.

On top of the corporate office jobs, positions at field operations will be affected as well due to store closures Sears initiated earlier in June.

AT band “Hard to Swallow” wins 2017 Battle for Hope

Fierce vocals, tight chops and explosive energy helped the AbelsonTaylor band Hard To Swallow win the 5th annual Battle for Hope competition at the Cubby Bear on Thursday night.

The Battle for Hope is a live music competition between bands formed exclusively within the ranks of individual advertising agencies. Proceeds are donated to Chicago’s Off The Street Club, an organization dedicated to helping youths in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

Escape Pod hires Celia Jones as new brand director

The Escape Pod Group announced today that that it has named veteran marketing executive Celia Jones as Brand Director.

In this role, she will be responsible for amplifying the agency brand and managing PR and marketing initiatives across the group’s three partner agencies: The Escape Pod, digital agency ORA Interactive, and experiential agency OutCold.

Adman Ron Bess named CEO of Myelin agency network

VETERAN AD MAN RON BESS, who in August was named president/CEO of Hy Connect agency, was just appointed CEO of the agency’s ownership entity, Boston-based Myelin Communications, which bought the Chicago office of Hy Connect last year.

Four-year old Myelin, owned by Chicago’s Baird Capital, is a network of companies specializing in health and financial services. HY Connect’s accounts include Blue Cross Blue Shield and Indiana University Health.

Northwestern Healthcare names Modesto marketing head

NORTHWESTERN MEMORIAL HEALTHCARE hired a new marketing officer: veteran Chicago adman Mark Modesto, who joined from his role as CEO of Ryan Partnership. He will oversee marketing relations for the hospital’s network of seven affiliated Chicago area hospitals.

“With Mark’s considerable experience,” said President / CEO Dean Harrison, “he will be able to elevate the Northwestern medical brand experience for the patients and communities we are privileged to serve.”

Hootenanny partners with Mark A Ward to expand design

Hootenanny has expanded its design department via a partnership with CD / motion graphics designer Mark A Ward, who has returned to Chicago after 18 years in New York.

Ward had moved to New York in 1998 where he worked with Click 3X before starting his own design firm, Threeoeight, in 2001 and whose clients include Conde Nast publications, Hogarthe marketing implementation agency, Viacom and various TV and cable networks.

Clorox business returns to FCB after 20 year absence

IT’S A WELCOME HOMECOMING for the massive Clorox portfolio of brands, globally, which has moved back to FCB after a 20 year run with DDB, following an account review that began last December.

The account spent $269 million on measured media on its main brand in 2015.

The household product giant ended its 71-year relationship with FCB’s San Francisco office in 1996 when it consolidated its business at DDB. It was billing $71 million at that time.

NFL Draft Town’s return to Chi-Town means labor jobs

THE MAMMOTH NFL DRAFT — which die-hard sports fans dubbed “the Academy Awards of Football” — returns to Chi-Town Draft Town for the second consecutive year, April 28-30, providing a myriad of jobs for film/TV union labor.

Tohtz joins Key Code Media, now in its new building

Omnicom Publicis Group to be world’s #1 ad firm

DDB and Leo Burnett aren’t rival agencies any more.  They will become sister companies in the merger of their respective parent companies, Omnicom Group and Publicis Groupe, which will create Omnicom Publicis Group, the biggest advertising firm on the planet.

The new global conglomerate, worth $35.1 billion, will have some 5,000 offices operating in more than 100 countries on five continents and employ 130,000 people.

Burnett and divisions win a colossal 74 ADDY Awards

The Chicago Ad Federation boasted it had 350 submissions for the recent ADDY Awards from local agencies and those entries were carefully considered by 25 top creatives from national pedigreed agencies. 

As a result of all this vetting, and no doubt based on the sheer volume of entries from Leo Burnett, it should have been no surprise that the Publicis giant had a colossal haul of 62 awards, including six out of the seven ADDY Bests.

New business and a high rating for Burnett

CHICAGO’S BIGGEST AGENCY, Leo Burnett, fittingly starts the New Year news cycle off with two noteworthy achievements.  The first: This month the Chicago agency takes over all ad duties for GM’s Chevy Silverado, which had been with Detroit’s recently formed Commonwealth comprised of teams from Omnicom Group and Interpublic.

Burnett will work on both new Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks.  The agency’s relationship with General Motors goes back to 19967.

TOURISM NARROWS AGENCY CHOICES. The local branches of three foreign-owned ad agencies got the nod from the Illinois Dept. of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as finalists for the $12.5 million Illinois Tourism account. Independents Grant/Jacoby and Hoffman York and Campbell-Mithun’s local office were out.

The finalists are WPP Group shops J. Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam, and Havas’ Euro RSCG Tatham Partners.

DCEO communications director Laura Hunter will oversee the final reviews with Jan Jostner, Tourism’s deputy director.

BBDO OPTS OUT. BBDO declined to participate in the review for Tourism’s $12 million account. Agency CEO Tonise Paul said “agency resources could be better utilized serving other areas of our business.” But she also predicted BBDO would be back in the travel and tourism business within a year. No count yet of the number of agencies soliciting the business. An announcement will be made in December. FCB and O&M were past Tourism agencies.
