“Like a Girl” creative A.J. Hassan joins R/GA as ECD

A.J. Hassan, the Leo Burnett VP/CD, acclaimed for her work as a key creative on the multi-honored viral phenom “Like a Girl” for Always/P&G, has joined R/GA as executive creative director of its Chicago office.

Hassan, who worked at Burnett for 17 years, was the creative who came up with the idea to ask young girls to enact on film what the pejorative phrase meant to them, during a brainstorming session with Judy John, CCO/CEO Leo Burnett Canada.

R/GA Chicago brings aboard two A-list creatives

TWO TOP AWARD-WINNING CREATIVES, Ken Erke and Matt Marcus, joined the Chicago office of R/GA, called advertising’s most creative interactive agency, as executive creative directors to help bolster the agency’s work out of Chicago.

R/GA Chicago currently has 13 employees and looks to grow to upwards of 30 by the end of the year.

Previously, Erke was an EVP/CCC at Y&R and crafted award-winning integrated campaigns for Sears, Craftsman and Die Hard, among others, and launched the Miller Genuine Draft “MGD 64” campaign.

MIFF’s Nov. 15 Ad Shorts Night to premiere 12 films

NFL Draft Town’s return to Chi-Town means labor jobs

THE MAMMOTH NFL DRAFT — which die-hard sports fans dubbed “the Academy Awards of Football” — returns to Chi-Town Draft Town for the second consecutive year, April 28-30, providing a myriad of jobs for film/TV union labor.

The Auditorium Theatre is again Draft headquarters, while the three-day football festival for fans expands to Grand Park and Congress Plaza for a 900,000-sq. ft. celebration of the Draft. Admission is free.

Artisans to sell their wares at CRC’s “Rock & Shop”

CHICAGO RECORDING is getting into the holiday spirit with its first “Rock and Shop,” Tuesday, Nov. 12, a chance to shop for a variety of unique artisan creations all made by agency and production people after they leave their day jobs.

Studio manager Rose Razal has gathered together 16 such artisans, whose jewelry, fine art, home decorations, knits, glassware, clothing, food, leather accessories, photographs and more will be open for business.

“We certainly invite other artists we may have missed to participate,” Razal says. 

GERTRUDE takes on revival of the Art Directors Club

Director Eduardo Cintron to Dictionary Films’ roster

Prediction: The erosion of agencies is “inevitable and imminent”

I once predicted that the company with the best integration will dominate the market, but not necessarily the one that held category leadership and any or all of the services it offered.   And now that we have reached critical mass, the tide is turning. 

The offering of integration alone is not enough to stand out in the marketplace, so the smart money doubles down here on creative ambitions and building a cohesive and compelling brand for themselves.

Christy LeMaster new director of IFP/Chicago

TAKING OVER THE REINS of the Independent Feature Project, Chicago’s 25-year old hub of indie filmmaking is Christy LeMaster, who has run IFP’s recent and successful fund-raising galas. She succeeds Ryan Jewell, who returned to his native Oklahoma City for family reasons.

LeMaster, who has a Masters in English from Truman State University, has a background in programming film festivals, starting with the True or False doc fest in Columbia, Mo.

Bob Winter becomes Y&R’s chief creative officer

A MAJOR AGENCY CHANGE is at hand as Bob Winter will join Y&R as chief creative officer of the Chicago office, starting in December. He moves over from Leo Burnett where he was SVP/ECD for more than three years on Altoids, Kellogg’s, Greenpeace and Caesars Palace.

Winter succeeds Ken Erke whose departure shocked Michigan Avenue when he joined digital agency R/GA a few months ago as executive creative director. Erke joined Y&R in2000 from Cramer/Krasselt.

Death of the production company?

Bob Greenberg of R/GA will give a keynote at the Boards Summit in New York on the death of the production company paradigm. At first this seemed startling but, after reflection and research, it’s rather old news.

Bob’s point: New multi-platform methods of persuasion, espoused by marketers and new-fangled digital agencies, are designing and implementing campaigns that cross traditional boundaries.
