Local filmmakers prepare to wreck their own work

The thrill of performance and the beauty of film will leave a lasting impression — and nothing more — for those who witness the Destroy Your Art event in the Lost Arts design studio on Goose Island next week.

Described in a press release as, “a wholly unique conceit from Chicago creative entrepreneur Rebecca Fons and filmmaker Jack C. Newell,” the evening will combine independent films and select “tools of destruction” as multiple artists present and destroy their work in a series of one-two-punches.

“Open Tables” now on iTunes, Video on Demand

OPEN TABLES,” the 2015 improv feature from award-winning director/actor Jack C. Newell, is now available on iTunes and Video On Demand. The romcom uses the foodie scene as a backdrop for stories of love lost, love found and the importance of a good main course.

Included in the cast of 34 are David Pasquesi, T.L Jagodowski, Keith Kupferer, Veth Lacke, Joel Murray, Mike McNamara and Newell, whose lead role defines him through the Paris adventure.

Second City classes to aid improvisers with film work

Classes starting June 23 at the Second City Training Center will include a new program on TV, film and digital to give improv actors a place to hone their on-screen skills in Chicago.

“That’s the need that we see and I think that it’s long overdue,” Jack C. Newell, who heads the program, told DNAinfo.

Lakeside cabin setting for Smith’s 2nd indie dramedy

The concept of Chicago writer / director Michael Glover Smith’s second indie drama, “Mercury in Retrograde,” grew out of a scene from his firstfeature comedy / drama, “Cool Apocalypse, ” in 2015.

This gave him, he says, “a chance to go deeper and darker with the conflict between couples: how do they talk to each other, how do they not talk to each other, and how do they talk around problems.”

“Empire” wraps season 2, will resume filming in July

TV UPDATE. “Empire” has wrapped its second season, with elegant scenes filmed at the Drake Hotel that lit up Michigan Ave. the past two days.  Fox TV’s hit series is expected to return to Chicago in July to start filming 18 episodes for season three.
