Longtime Chicago post house Cutters Studios announced the promotion of Dustin Kaufman to the position of editor, and the immediate launch of a new satellite studio in Kansas City, which Kaufman will lead.
“Dustin is extremely creative and visionary, but he is also one of the most driven, determined, hard-working individuals I have ever had the pleasure of working with,” Cutters partner and editor Matt Walsh shared. “He cannot help but create amazing things, no matter what circumstances surround him. He is also extremely fast, and hungry.”
On Sunday June 4, Cutters Editor Michael Lippert, debuted his new short film, Miriam is Going to Mars, at the prestigious film festival, Dances With Films.
The short, running time 15:30, is a lovely character study about a woman, Miriam, who suffers from Schizophrenia and attempts to escape her psychiatric ward by applying to the first manned trip to Mars.
I had a chance to sit down with Michael at the Chinese Theater’s Film Lounge and talk about his film, which stars Ann Stoneville, Chandra Michaels and Nathaniel Buescher.
On April 13, Cutters Studio Detroit (CSD) helped the Detroit Lions rally their fan base and earn national headlines by hosting a sensational “uniform unveil” event that was live-streamed by more than 300,000 viewers.

Cutters’ Flavor design division expanded again to 12 with the addition of Flame artist Christopher Elliott, who moved after a 16-month stint at Utopic and a decade at Red Car Chicago, with the title of director of finishing at both.
Flavor has a staff of 12 with Elliott, its third Flame compositor and finishing artist, working alongside Elliott is Flavor’s third Flame composite and finishing artist, working alongside motion graphic and 3D artists.
Designer Claudia Chagui moved to New York from Chicago on Jan. 2 and barely had time to hang up her clothes before stepping into her new role as creative director and business lead for Hint, an experiential design firm.

CUTTERS HALLOWEEN PARTY Thursday night, one of the two biggest, must-attend parties of the year (along with AICP’s big night Nov. 15) expects a record-breaking 800 guests – 90% of them wearing costumes.
The party, themed as “Bloodbath on the Orient Express,” takes place at The Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake, starting at 6 p.m. The costume contest winners will be announced at 9:30 and the winner of the most outrageous/creative/daring costume will go home with a thousand bucks, second place winner with $500.
Cutters’ editor Ryan McGuire is a busy guy. Last Friday, he presided over the opening of Cutters new Tokyo office; on Monday he greeted his parents, Ellen and Tim McGuire, sister and brother who flew in from Chicago to attend his wedding Wednesday at a shrine in Kyoto.
Two years in the works, Cutters’ new office is, to the best of their knowledge, the only foreign-run post house in the Japanese market, which is second only to the US in the amount of TV spot production.
KUDOS TO CUTTERS for winning three top 2012 AICE awards at the ceremony held Thursday in Marina Del Ray Ritz Carlton. Editor Chris Hafner scored Best of Chicago and Best Automotive for Fiat 500 “Karl Abarth,” and John Binder of Another Country aced Best Sound Design for Allstate. Optimus Design won for Best Design for Craftsman.
In an a seismic personnel move, The Whitehouse’s A-list editor Matt Walsh, joins Cutters March 1 as a partner/editor. He becomes Cutters Chicago’s tenth editor and the total company’s nineteenth, among all its offices in Santa Monica, Detroit, Tokyo and Chicago.
Walsh had been with The Whitehouse for 11 years, starting as a runner back in 2001 and working his way up to assistant. In 2006, he was promoted to editor and has been blazing a trail ever since.
Cutters Detroit and sister company Moonlink are sharing the unique dual skills of new arrival Jim Talbot, possibly the only combination editor/DP among Detroit production/post companies. His addition brings Cutters Detroit’s editorial staff to five.
Award-winning Talbot, who is considered a very respected and high-end editor, joined the companies two weeks ago after a 21 year Detroit editing career.
Cutters’ current expansion knows no bounds. Chicago’s biggest post company has just implemented its L.A. operation with two high-profile editors and a Chicago-transferred assistant editor and shortly will be seeking Asian business for its new Tokyo office.
Already a part of the Detroit post scene with its partnership in RingSide Creative, newly established Cutters Detroit is creating its own identity in the Motor City’s multibillion dollar ad market in its own new offices in the RingSide facility in the Detroit suburb of Oak Park.
Cutters Detroit has a staff of six, headed by executive producer Mary Connolly, who was recruited from Griot Editorial, where she worked for 12 years, starting as a rep and moving to a producer’s position.
Tim McGuire’s Cutters, one of Chicago’s biggest and most established production/post houses, just got bigger. It finalized the acquisition last week of integrated media studio RingSide Creative, LLC of Oak Park, Michigan.
Cutters purchased RingSide in partnership with Detroit’s Steven Wild’s Wild Acquisitions and Brian Efrusy of RingSide, who continues as the company’s CFO.
For Cutters assistant editor Kristin Gerhart, volunteering is an important part of her life. Whether it’s working at PAWS Chicago or editing pro-bono PSAs, she is always giving time and talent.
But it wasn’t until a trip to the Dominican Republic, when she wandered beyond the resort gates and witnessed poverty that she knew she had to do more.
“I wanted to make a difference and I didn’t know where to start,” the 24-year old Columbia College graduate said.
Within the space of a year, post house executive Craig Duncan has come full circle.
Leaving Detroit’s multi-division Grace & Wild after more than a decade for single-service Red Car editorial, he’s now Cutters, Inc.’s newly appointed executive producer of Cutters Editorial, and also leads the company’s other divisions, Sol Design, Another Country, Dictionary Films and Picnic.
Duncan will work with long-time Cutters staffer, Cindy Duffy, who has been elevated from executive producer to director of post production of all five divisions.
Grant Gustafson, award-winning spot editor known for his high-profile work on Anheuser Busch brands, has joined Cutters, from a dozen years at The Whitehouse and its predecessor company, The Lookinglass.
Gustafson joined in mid-August as Cutters ninth Chicago editor and the fifth partner of the 25-year old post house. The move, he says, “felt like a good career move to branch out and expand my horizons.”
“It’s exciting to have Grant join us,” says Cutters founder/president Tim McGuire.
More than 450 guests crowded Cutters downtown facilities for its first Halloween party, one that assuredly will become an annual event for hosts Cutters, Sol Design, Another Country and Dictionary films.
Since the guests were mostly adpeople, their inventive costumes expressed their creativity to the hilt — with three guests, two from DDB, taking home serious cash prizes for their originality.

Cutters has the 2009 distinction of hosting AICE’s traveling trophy, courtesy of assistant editor Carl Schumacher winning the top prize in AICE’S recent Splice Capades challenge.
Originally called Trailer Park, the contest gives assistants the opportunity to display their editorial chops and win a passel of prizes, not the least being the traveling trophy engraved with Schumacher’s name.
About 125 editors and assistants, who staff the nine local AICE member companies, cheered the finalists and five winners at the Bottom Lounge in the West Loop.
Cutters partner/editor Kathryn Hempel was in the audience at the 8th annual Bicycle Film Festival in New York last weekend for the premiere of a doc she wrote, edited and post-supervised.
The doc, “Road to Roubaix,” about the 110-year old Paris-Roubaix race, was produced by two biking enthusiasts located in the Washington, D.C. area.
Cutters’ Christopher Gotschall edited the three Time Warner Cable services commercials that won a record total of 10 Silver Telly Awards for agency Mobium Creative Group.
The Time Warner campaign had to be exceptional, winning out of 14,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents for the 28th annual competition.
Mobium was a new Cutters client when it came to the post house and Gottshall last year. The comedy spots under the campaign title of “Sharing Your Passion with You,” dealt with the problems of small business owners and the solutions Time Warner offers.

Cutters’ owner/editor Chris Claeys is Chicago’s man of the hour. Maybe even a tiny footnote to White Sox history. The possessor of one of the most valuable mementoes of major league baseball.
He caught the ball Paul Konerko grand slammed into left field Sunday night to give the Sox the lead over the Houston Astros.
And so he was serendipitously positioned to catch Konerko’s grand slam, the 18th grand slam in World Series history.

To say that Seed Media Arts director David Rosen resorted to childish behavior on the set of a recent shoot is incorrect. That was his plan from the beginning.
“I’m a goofball,” he explains. “If I’m playful and spontaneous, then the kids are going to be playful and spontaneous as well.”
Working on a concept by DDB Chicago for global engineering firm Emerson, Rosen directed on-camera interviews with 70 kids aged five- to-sixteen-years-old in two separate locations over four days.
Shortly after Sum1 opened four years ago, the audio post and sound design boutique became known as an unofficial extension of the advertising agencies it served. Since moving into a customized studio at 180 N. Michigan Ave. earlier this year, that reputation is now just a few steps away from most of Chicago’s largest shops.
“No more hailing a ride, generating an expense report and producing a paper trail to get to and from our studios,” says producer / sound designer Shawn Ballman.
AICE changed up the rules for this year’s Camp Kuleshov trailer competition, which is accepting submissions until September 5th.
Since its founding in 2002, CK has invited assistant editors, assistant audio engineers and assistant graphic/vfx artists at AICE member companies to show what they can do in three specific categories: editing, graphic design and audio.
Brittany Wagner and Kait Staley — who co-created, co-wrote and co-star in the new dark comedy webseries, Raising Adults — are not afraid to shoot scenes that feature at least one of them using the bathroom. And they’re the mature members of the cast.
“The series follows two young girls raising their crazy, disabled parents,” explains Britt. “It’s all about their struggle to get by, reluctantly taking care of the ones they love.”

In the course of her four-decade career, Ratny often boasted that she had “forged a community where none existed before.” The evening’s lineup of guest speakers proved those words to be true.

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH and it kicked off with Schafer Condon Carter (SCC), The Ad Council and FEMA’s Ready Campaign of PSAs and online videos that help families to be prepared before emergencies like earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes occur.
