Summary

The HoopsHIGH Engineer for FSM summer programming has an important role in the exciting world of Free Spirit Media. This dynamic individual must be part teacher, part live production expert, and part editor. To be successful, the engineer needs to be a team player, able to maintain focus, perspective, attitude, and attention to detail in a fast-paced, creative, and youth-driven environment during our summer sports broadcasting program. Our current production coordinator will be on parental leave for July and August. We are looking for a candidate who can fill in on a temporary basis.

Background

Free Spirit Media (FSM) is a non-profit organization based in Chicago that cultivates diverse youth voices to transform media and society. FSM partners with schools and organizations to provide project-based learning experiences and work readiness experience to high school age youth. Participants develop creative, technical, and communication skills as they produce sports telecasts, and other media projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Program/ Administrative Responsibilities

• Implement media production and sports broadcasting programming, including enhancing lesson plans and instructing 15 youth participants; provide video and live production instruction for tournament game coverage.

• Participate in day-to-day lesson preparation and delivery, including lessons in on-camera operations, editing, producing, technical directing, graphics, announcing, and reporting.

• Co-teach with collaborating instructor in program facilitation, working successfully with youth participants and community partners.

• Edit and deliver game telecasts to CAN TV.

• Assist and teach youth on site about equipment, troubleshooting, signal flow, and production rundown.

• Create and maintain youth development environment where students receive academic, artistic, social, and emotional support.

Technical/Production Operations Responsibilities

• Participate in show/game production and editing of final games for CAN TV, YouTube and HoopsHIGH website.

• Oversee live-streaming of games.

• Participate in care, set-up/break-down, and management of camera, editing and video equipment.

• Supervise the control room/Tricaster to record games during home games.

• Engineer mobile control room.

• Organize and maintain equipment checkout and return system.

• Report on and manage equipment status, including ordering repairs and replacements.

• Monitor and manage media storage and backups on computers.

• Troubleshoot software and computer malfunctions, including Final Cut Pro.

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience

• Bachelor’s degree (BA) from a four-year college or university in a media or production, sports broadcast or comparable professional experience.

• A minimum of two years working with high-school or college-aged youth.

• A minimum of three years video, film, or television experience.

• Advanced video editing skills.

• Knowledge of video production and post-production tools including the use and maintenance of video switcher, video cameras, audio board, character generator, replay controller, lights, microphones, graphics, effects, VTR/DDR set up and operation, Final Cut Pro, etc.

• Advanced knowledge of sports broadcasting production including multi-camera shooting procedures and operations.

• Excellent people skills working in a diverse environment.

• Excellent organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple projects.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, high level of computer literacy, and innovative thinking around social media practices.

Work Requirements

Our current Production Coordinator will be on parental leave for July and August. We are looking for a candidate who can fill in for 10-12 weeks from early-mid June to mid-late August 2017 for up to 32 hours a week. Free Spirit Media is an equal opportunity employer. This dynamic individual must be part producer/shooter/editor, part visionary, part coach and mentor and part entrepreneur. To be successful, the Producer needs to be a team player, who can maintain focus, perspective, a positive attitude and attention to detail in a fast-paced, creative and youth/young adult-driven environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 • Support Lead Producer in the pre-production, production and post-production of projects, including overseeing shooting and editing and engaging youth/young adults to participate at all points in the production

• Ensure product deliverables are on time, on budget and meet client expectations

• Support framework for youth/young adult engagement that establishes Free Spirit PRO as part of FSM’s strategy of providing professional and career pathways for our youth and alumni

• Collaborate with Lead Producer to engage and collaborate with staff, current students and alumni during productions

• Support Lead Producer in mentoring youth through FSM’s summer internship program, Flash Forward, for advanced high school and alumni participants

• Support Lead Producer with client relationships and logistics, including facilitating production crew and client meetings, staying on production timeline and budget and tracking hours

• Represent FSM in external/outreach settings, including with clients, other organizations, media industry professionals at conferences and workshops

• Track and submit youth/young adult hours for payroll and project hours for budget tracking

• Participate in organizational youth evaluation process

• Support FSM technology and media needs, including archiving media, ordering equipment and providing technical support to youth/young adult

• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications & Experience:

 • Bachelor’s degree in a media or production specific area or comparable professional experience

• 2+ years of experience producing media professionally (video, especially in genres of Documentary, Promotional, Event Production and/or PSA)

• 2+ years overseeing or coaching small production crew, especially those including youth or young adults

•Advanced shooting, editing, lighting and audio skills, preferably with advanced experience on Adobe Premiere

• Adobe After Effects experience preferred

• Passionate about youth and their education and inspiring youth voice and vision

• Experience or interest in engaging and working with youth and young adults, primarily ages 18-25

• Excellent people skills working in a diverse environment

• Excellent organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple projects at a time

• Proven track record of innovation, creativity, problem-solving and taking initiative

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a high level of computer literacy

Work Requirements:

This is a full-time position. Hours may exceed 40 hours a week. Occasional evening and weekend hours required. Regular access to a car is required.

Compensation & Benefits:
