Lead Teacher, In-School Programming

Reports To: Program Manager, In-School & Curriculum

Directly Supervises: Production Coordinator

The Lead Teacher, In-School Programming will teach three courses at one of the North Lawndale College Prep (NLCP) campuses including Digital Media Level 1, Digital Media Level 2, and Advanced Senior Documentary Project. This person will work closely with the entire in-school programming team on lesson planning and shared teaching philosophies. The Lead Teacher is also responsible for organizational partnerships and administration tasks including academic assessment, program evaluation and reporting, and supervising distribution of youth media.

The ideal candidate is someone that maintains focus, perspective, positive attitude, and attention to detail in a fast-paced, creative, project-based, youth-driven environment. The candidate will be committed to creating to a learning-centered, collaborative space for students and their team.

Primary Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement media production programming (levels introductory to advanced), including writing curriculum, as well as teaching and instructing students on photography, audio and video production, and documentary filmmaking and researching new practices and contemporary examples of these media forms

  • Supervise and coach Collins campus Production Coordinator, collaborate with NLCP-Christiana campus instructor to align lessons, evaluation and pace in delivery of program curriculum, and work successfully with students and community partners

  • Create and maintain youth development environment where students receive academic, artistic, social and emotional support

  • Coordinate and maintain existing and cultivate new relationships with local media professionals to serve as guest speakers and mentors

  • Plan, oversee, and attend field trips to media production companies, organizations, and events

  • Assist with planning FSM showcases of youth media from in-school program, including Spring Senior Project Panels and NLCP Colloquium, and other events to share and celebrate student work

  • Work collaboratively with school administration and other service providers to ensure quality classroom instruction and support school partner’s college readiness efforts in program

  • Maintain students’ attendance and grades, participate in parent-teacher conferences, and communicate student successes and challenges with caregivers and school administration

  • Support FSM’s leadership team in evaluation efforts and reporting requirements by assisting in the collection of data and writing reports on in-school programming

  • Participate in FSM and NLCP staff meetings and professional development trainings, as well as support facilitation of these meetings and trainings as needed

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including coordinating with NLCP to support filming of school events per the partnership agreement

  • Identify and support the recruitment of youth to summer programming and internship opportunities based upon skill level and interest

  • Serve as liaison with alumni from NLCP program to share information about media opportunities and FSM events

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; focus in media arts, education, or youth development preferred

  • ISBE Professional Educator Licensure in relevant content area and/or CTE educator license with stipulations preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years experience working with high school aged students in an education or youth development setting; experience as lead classroom teacher in a school setting preferred

  • Experience teaching predominantly African American student population from under-resourced communities

  • Experience working with student populations with different needs, including young people with individualized education plans, behavior-management plans, specialized instructional needs, or chronic exposure to trauma

  • Experience in production of video, film, or television media, as well as post-production tools, such as Final Cut Pro or other non-linear editing software

  • Experience or interest in designing and developing engaging project-based program with youth

  • Strong professional organizational skills and ability to balance tasks; experience with a complex educational partnerships

  • Ability to use effective, engaging, and persuasive speech and writing in instruction, presentations, meetings, and site visits

Work Requirements:

This is a full-time position, starting early August. Hours may exceed 40 hours a week with out-of-school time devoted to lesson planning, grading, and parent/student communication. Occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Compensation & Benefits:

Salary: Competitive and commensurate with education and experience; Range $35,000 - $45,000

The Pathways Manager for Free Spirit Media leads the organizations’ creative workforce development initiatives—providing underrepresented emerging media-makers ages 18-25 with professional development, production and skills training, mentorship and work-placed opportunities.

The Pathways Portfolio includes four key components: The Chicago Track Workshop Series: a series of open career exploration workshops exposing young adults to the film and media industry; Industry Certification Program: three month intensive professional development and production training program; Flash Forward: a summer internship program; Fellowship Program: supporting and engaging alumni in developing their careers in film and media.

The Pathways Manager for Free Spirit Media plays a key role in driving program design and execution, partner engagement and strategic alliances, and participant engagement and advocacy. The ideal candidate should have a familiarity with the local film and media landscape; a robust knowledge of industry norms and best practices; a background in media education, particularly with young adults, and a strong interest in creative workforce development. The Pathways Manager connects participants, partners, mentors and employers, playing the role of advocate. To be successful, the Manager needs to be a well-organized, dynamic project manager and passionate youth advocate, who balances relationship building with mentors and young people, while developing, executing and evaluating innovative, impactful programs with community and organizational partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 Oversee and execute the development and implementation of Pathways vision, portfolio, and model for growth, determining staffing, budget and program activities

 Continue to align Free Spirit Media’s Pathways portfolio with existing programs, curriculum and programmatic strategic goals, seeking opportunities for collaboration with all program staff to engage in Pathways initiatives and programming

 Provide oversight and guidance to ensure consistency of program delivery and facilitation reflecting best practices across all Pathways programs through the following: logic and program model reflecting best practices in youth development, workforce development, professional development practices; completion of program plans, mentor and industry partner meetings, and program evaluation oversight

 Lead ongoing development of the evaluation model, tools and systems to Pathways programs, overseeing the ongoing collection and management of all data to align with strategic priorities and funding requirements

 Maintain and improve Participant and Mentor database and tracking systems, ensuring through documentation of participant and mentor engagement and progression

  Build and maintain relationships with industry professionals to leverage mentorship, entry level & apprenticeship positions in the film, television, commercial and independent production industries

 Develop and manage partnerships with key partners and mentors in the film and media community, including, but not limited to 2112, IFP, AbelCine, IATSE 476 and more. Draft MOUs as necessary with contracted temporary instructors, production and community partners

 Collaborate with In-school and After school program managers and other members of the leadership team to ensure a strong connection FSM programs

 Lead, support, and coach the Career and Professional Development Coach & and Student Ambassador; Monitor and manage staff workload and assess capacity/changes in key responsibilities; meet with the team on a consistent basis to develop programming structure and supports, provide feedback; Set expectations and accountability by creating performance goals and clarifying alignment to strategic organizational goals, on-going

 Support the Career and Professional Development Coach in developing a programmatic framework to coach alumni and fellows in developing ongoing career pathways, pursuing short term and long term employment opportunities and reaching personal and professional goals

 Oversee the implementation of the Pathways initiatives in the strategic plan in partnership with the Pathways team members and Executive Director

 Collaborate on grant proposals, funder reports, and lead partner evaluation strategies such as FSM and MHA Employee Assessment forms, etc.

 Represent FSM in external settings to other organizations through conferences, workshops, and community events

 Attend all leadership, technology, and manager team meetings to support the development of strategic organizational goals, grant outcomes, technology processes, and youth council events Qualifications & Experience:

 Bachelor’s degree in a media production and/or education specific area or comparable

 5+ years of experience working in program development and management

 Comprehensive knowledge and familiarity with a variety of film + media production environments

 Passionate about youth and their education and inspiring youth voice and vision

 Experience or interest in engaging and working with youth and young adults, primarily ages 18- 25

 Excellent people skills working in a diverse environment

 Excellent organizational abilities and capacity to manage multiple projects at a time

Qualifications & Experience:

 • Bachelor’s degree in a media or production specific area or comparable professional experience

• 2+ years of experience producing media professionally (video, especially in genres of Documentary, Promotional, Event Production and/or PSA)

• 2+ years overseeing or coaching small production crew, especially those including youth or young adults

•Advanced shooting, editing, lighting and audio skills, preferably with advanced experience on Adobe Premiere

• Adobe After Effects experience preferred
