Mimi Productions shoots local scenes for LA feature

Although the “Bad Moms” Hollywood feature — to be theatrically released this Friday, July 29 — is set in Chicago but was filmed in Louisiana-as-Chicago over the winter, it nonetheless has two establishing location scenes that were actually filmed here.

Producer Michelle DeLong and cinematographer David Miller’s Mimi Productions was tapped to provide specific Chicago scenes “that felt like Chicago,” DeLong says.

Contacted by a mutual friend working on the movie for the assignment, they shot over a three day weekend in mid-May at the Fremont, a Near North night club and on East Oak Street, home of high fashion name retailers. During the location scout, DeLong used the Periscope app on her iPhone to live-stream their location choices to the director and post supervisor back in LA.

Periscope was also used when they were ready to shoot the chose locations “so they could see the angles we chose and direct us,” she says.

Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (“The Hangover”) were the writer / directors. Mila Kunis stars as the lead character, Amy, who joins forces with two other over-stressed moms, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, as they set out to liberate themselves from conventional responsibilities by going on an un-mom-like binge of overdue freedom, fun and self-indulgence.
