ARU’s sound work on Museum film cited for award

Hear this! Audio Recording Unlimited’s (ARU) engineering staff was nominated for a 2016 Motion Picture Sound Engineers’ (MPSE) Golden Reel award for their sound work on “The Great Chicago Adventure.”

Cited in the category of Best Sound Editing: Special Venue, were Tom Haigh, supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer; sound effects editor Don Arbuckle and effects/Foley editors Nick Anello and Ana De Irisam.

They provided original sound effects design, music supervision, ADR and the 7.1 mix for the exciting 27-minute “Adventure,” on permanent exhibition at the Chicago History Museum’s renovated Robert R. McCormick theatre. 

The sound mix shows off the immersive capabilities of the theatre’s new audio sound system.  The theatre had been equipped with state-of-the-art 4K digital projection, surround-sound speakers and comfortable, fully-accessible seating.

“The Great Adventure” follows 11-year old Roger and his teen babysitter, Jean, who discover an ancient artifact that transports them through major events in Chicago’s history, from the Great Fire of 1871, to President Obama’s 2008 Grant Park victory speech.

MPSE nominees Don Arbuckle, Nick Anello,  Ana De Irisam and Tom Haigh.Produced by Answers Media and the Chicago History Museum for an estimated $300,000 budget, it was written by award-winning Colin Costello and director Sehban Zaidi.

In the Special Venue category, ARU engineers are competing against engineers on three sci-films and an educational doc about humpback whales.  Special Venue is one of 24 MPSE categories whose estimated 150 nominees worked on some of the biggest and best films, TV shows and series of 2015. 

The 2016 Golden Reel Awards will be presented Feb. 27 at a dinner and awards show at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.  Sam Raimi will receive the 2016 Filmmaker Award and sound engineer Richard King will be honored with the 2016 MPSE Career Achievement Award.
